Lots of bikes. Cobbles. Brick buildings. Old. New. Canals.
The first impressions of Copenhagen – a city which seems to move along in a relaxed but very purposeful fashion. Apparently 70% of Danish households don’t own a car. Cyclists are everywhere, usually moving at speed. Most don’t wear helmets and ride very confidently along the wide cycle lanes. Bikes are parked with both abandon and purpose it seems, all shapes and sizes, carrying kids and shopping and occasionally you see a pile-up of unattended bikes. Copenhagen has an ambitious goal to be the world’s first CO2 neutral capital so this mode of transport is critical. Cycles and cars have equal rights so one must take care to look out for oncoming bikes from the right! Link to photo series – Bicycles of Copenhagen
We spent most of the day meandering through the royal gardens, along the canals and through city streets – nice main area car/ cycle free. Series of canals and wide streets. Disappointed to find Tivoli Gardens closed for three weeks but did get a peek through the fences. Overcast weather well suited to walking. Nice flat whites enjoyed… but $8 a cup.
Lots of lovely design – furniture and lighting and new architecture which contrasts with the old.
The home of Lego – great store variety and lovely free to use lego stations at the airport. The home of Pandora too but prices very similar so no purchases made. Generally, Copenhagen appears to be an expensive city in which to live – if eating out prices are anything to go by.
Staying at Hotel Christian IV named after King of Denmark and Norway 1588 – 1648. He fathered an “impressive” 32 children (2 wives and several mistresses) and was responsible for many buildings around the city.

Hey Gill
I have been away sick for the last week and a half. Great to get back to work and read your blog. My how time flies. Love the pic of the mokopuna in the sandpit, the castles and of course the grand canyon. Great to hear about 76% of the county using bicyles or other modes of transport. NZ can certanly learn athing or too. I can’t believe you can jam soo much into the short amount of time. Keep the photos coming. Mariaxx
