The Steam Clock is a central attraction. The clock is powered by steam driving a series of ball-weights, chains and gears. The clock also has three small electric motors to help operate two fans to blow steam out the top and play the tunes on the whistles on top of the clock case. Every quarter hour, the clock whistles and shoots steam in its version of the Westminster Chime. On the hour there is a toot from each whistle.
Enjoyed the Inform Interiors store and John Fluevog Shoes – “unique soles for unique souls” -an unusual store with a glass ceiling between exposed brick walls. Eclectic mix of shoes for men and women.
Fascinating wander around Hills Native Art – totems, masks and carvings.
A first ever experience tonight and hopefully not to be repeated. Mark and I got stuck in a lift. We are on the 24th floor of hotel. Lifts are all operated by touchscreens where you put in where you want to go and it assigns you to a lift – A, B, C, D or E.
We got E this time (durr), but instead of going down it went up floor by floor pretty much to 35th – people kept getting in despite us telling them of malfunction. It then became apparent we would go down floor by floor – the doors opened each time but too far to take the stairs and about a dozen slightly stressed and annoyed people wanted to just get down. We were at the back of the lift. Eventually got to the lobby and everyone rushed out but doors closed as we went to get out and pushing the “doors open” button in an attempt to stop closure did not work. So after pushing help button and a few conversations with management, who took awhile to respond, they eventually got an engineer who pried the doors open. Certainly glad we were not stuck when the lift was full!
We were ready for dinner and a drink at the iconic Joe Fortes!
