Adelaide Oval

The weather didn’t co-operate but we had a good tour of the Adelaide Oval today. A misty rain and fog in the distance restricted distance views but as most of the stadium tour was under cover it was ok- perhaps just not shining at it’s best!ik

Toured under the stadium, through the “visiting team” rooms, stood on the edge of the ground watching the grass being mowed to perfection. The Oval has been home to cricket since 1819 and more recently to Australian football and league.

Of special interest to me was the heritage listed scoreboard with its old manual system of posting the cricket scores. The scoring system was installed in 1911 – 107 years old this year. The light system board is 89 years old. 3 people did inside the box at any one time passing numbers and letters up the 3 stories,  winding the numbers and winding up the white flag as needed. Very hot in summer as no aircon! There’s a waitlist for a job in there with long serving attendants very reluctant to give up. A 55 year veteran has just been replaced by a 37 year veteran on the top job!

The Oval is Ellen’s place of work in her events coordination role for South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) members. Great to check this out!
